Medical Massage Degree & Career

Medical massage differs from other massages in that it is specifically intended to treat a medical condition in a patient that has been diagnosed by a physician. The intent of a medical massage is specifically to alleviate symptoms and is not intended for promoting relaxation as are many other massages. Medical massage therapists often work alongside medical professionals as a team to incorporate massage into a specific treatment plan for each patient.

To work as a medical massage therapist, you can receive certification through courses offered in addition to or as a part of your massage therapy education. Some massage therapists prefer to become certified through classes that can also count toward their continuing education requirements. Other massage therapists choose to earn a post-graduate diploma in medical massage. Some feel that achieving more education provides better opportunities for employment. No matter which method you choose to take for your education as a medical massage therapist, it is important that you select a program that is either meets national standards or is nationally accredited so that your education will hold the respect it deserves.
