Hypnotherapy uses a relaxed yet focused state of being that unites the right and left sides of the brain to temporarily put the client in a place where the subconscious mind is more open to suggestions. Hypnotherapy can be used to bring about positive changes such as stopping smoking, changing eating patterns, raising self esteem, and reducing anxiety, stress, pain, and depression. Many hypnotherapists combine hypnotherapy with careers in massage, acupuncture, medicine, and psychotherapy.
In order to work as a hypnotherapist, you will need to get certified to practice. Certification courses can vary from beginning to advanced and can include apprenticeships, weekend seminars, intensive courses, and continuing education classes. Most quality programs will require between 150 to 350 hours of training and will include such topics as brain functions, neurolinguistics, and hypnotherapy techniques. Most courses will also cover such practical subjects as communication skills, advertising/marketing, ethics, and business skills. While there is currently no licensing process or accredited degree program, hypnotherapists can pursue professional certification through either the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners, which has been largely responsible for the “recognition and regulation of hypnotherapy training in the USA,” or the National Guild of Hypnotists.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics includes hypnotherapists among practitioners of alternative medicine and states that the field of health care in general is one of the fastest growing industries and will bring 3 million new jobs between 2006 and 2016. It also states that alternative care sites are on the rise. This facts indicate that a career as a hypnotherapist will enjoy growth and promises of success over the coming years. Add to that the ability of a hypnotherapist to work either as a part of an existing clinic or to be self-employed and you have a career that offers opportunities for flexibility and accomplishment.
